The words are selected from a list of very commonly used words. Some typing speed tests use words with difficult spelling, but that’s unfair. You want to measure typing speed not your reading skills!

Measuring your typing ability based on words per minute is misleading. You could type more three letter words in a minute than six letter words – so what does a typing speed of words per minute prove?

Characters per minute is a better measure and allows you to compare yourself accurately with others.

Don’t worry if you have a hang up about typing speed in words per minute – we measure both!

The “raw CPM” is the actual number of characters you type per minute, including all the mistakes. The “corrected CPM” counts only the characters in correctly typed words. “WPM” is calculated using an international standard of the corrected CPM divided by five.

Here’s a histogram of CPM scores. All scores are grouped in ranges; these are at the bottom. Per range, the height of the corresponding bar indicates how many tests resulted in a score within that range.

After you’ve done the test, you get your percentile score. This indicates how fast you type compared to others who have taken the same test.
